Privacy and safety

Introduction

New technologies open up a world of positive opportunities for communicating and interacting with friends as well as exchanging ideas and content with people who share common interests and points of view.

The convergence of technical and communication platforms allows users to interact with increasing ease across multiple platforms and devices – such as internet-enabled mobile phones, game consoles and PCs.

The immediacy afforded by the latest ICT advances can, however, make users less cautious about protecting privacy, online identity and reputation. Yet doing so is key to responsible use and to making the most of the services available.

Keeping safe online - whether on a PC or when using a mobile phone - is everyone’s responsibility. For children and young people, it is vital we teach them to understand the importance of protecting their privacy when using the technologies.

As an educator, it is equally important to consider your own privacy when using your mobile, email or social networking accounts. In particular, you need to think carefully about who you invite to view your social networking profile and the information you post onto your blog or profile.
This section provides information on how you can stay safe and how you can help your students to stay safe when using new technologies.
